Digipak genre research

This style of genre is what i am aiming for on the digipak. However, where this digipak has 2 c.d's i will only have 1. The front cover of there digipak has a picture of the four men in retro style clothes on a black background with block colours randomly spread out. Then its has there band name and title of the album in capitals over the top of the colours, there expressions on there face show seriousness and general blank thoughts.

On the back cover we can see that there is the bar code which is needed to scan the product before it is brought so we can see the availability of the product and price. we also the track numbers and names in numeric order from c.d 1 to c.d 2. We still see that the background has stayed the same, there expressions are similar but there all seem to be more comfortable. On this page we also see who the copyrights holders are, music company, date it was issued, cold plays own website and various others, manufacterers name and the addresses.

On the whole lay out of the digipak we can see the dates on when the band are going on tour and where there are playing at. There is available information as well on the band, so how they got together what sought of hits they have had, there biggest success.

Risk assessments

After assessing our music video set we found the above faults, could cause potential hazards. However, there were a few hazards that weren't required for our music video. The major hazard of special effects made us think, because we are using flashing lights in our music video so it cause could problems if anyone of the technical crew or actors had epilepsy. This does not apply as non of them do. As we are using a green screen in our music video there will be a lot of special effects added to the editing to make it look professional. however, non of these will cause any problems as our group have no outline health issues or behavior problems.

Pop Genre Review

POP

Visual style-

The visual style is usually based on a narrative, however, for the more faster paced videos, repetition is also key, with less narrative, as it is so much more difficult to show a story with really fast frames, so with out a narrative, we have to find a mosaic of either objects, or maybe use a dance format, as in most fast paced videos.

Pace-   The pace of a pop video, within this genre, is conventionally very fast, averaging on about 28 Per 30 seconds. For Bertie and I, we both feel like this is a challenge, as other genres of music, such as R’n’B, tend to have longer frames, of which would be easier to do! However, we have some great ideas for the video, because repetition is one of the visual styles that is commonly used in fast paced pop videos.

Mise en scene- for the type of pace of videos that we are researching, the Mise en scene, is mainly in either a studio or a setting that is continuous throughout the whole video. The background colours are predominantly a basic colour, or are monotonous, to emphasise the object of which the video wants the audience to focus their attention on.

Performance- the performance, in our case, a dance routine, will be performed by a female, as this is the object we want the audience to focus on, she will be performing a dance routine, and the camera will be like everyone’s eyes, watching her, as the songs lyrics clearly say; ‘I like the way you move’. However, at the beginning, we will be using a small amount of narrative, just so that the audience are not bored of just the same sort of visual throughout. Also, it will help the audience make sense of the video, as it is not in pops conventions to use videos of a strictly mosaic of motifs format (the genre that predominantly uses this is “rave” or “happy hardcore”). Pop videos usually have a story to them even if it still not that clear.

Lighting- Lighting is mainly focused on the ‘person’ or ‘band’ of which are performing, for example, if the artist is singing, the lighting will be focused on their face, or mouth, or if there is a dance routine being performed, then the lighting will be focused on the dancer, or certain body parts of the dancer.

Editing- editing is fast cut, the frames last for an average of two/ three seconds.  In pop the editing would consist of mainly medium shots and close ups, however, there is a growing trend for use of abstract shots, or abstract angles, on certain objects, or maybe there will be an object in the frame, that when zoomed in on, then it will be the main focus on the next frame, this I feel is a very good effect.

Performance- the performance of the pop genre, is mainly surrounded in dance, the people are young and attractive, and are very slim. The style is squeaky clean, and clear cut. The lighting shows of the performance by highlighting the dance moves and the styles

Research for digipaks and magazine adverts

This picture is from an entertainment magazine with the focus on a variety of films. This was the front page for the october/ november month for 'Empire'. I scanned it onto the computer after reading through it and examining the types of adverts in it e.g. the size of the advert, styles, genres, size of the D.V.D. digipaks and the differences between D.V.D. digipaks and Music digipaks.

This front cover is taken from the Rock 'n' pop magazine Q. This was scanned on to the computer out of the October/ November issue of the magazine. The magazine talks about different styles of Rock 'n' pop, what's in the charts at the moment, up and coming solo artists and groups, and you can also see the different sizes of adverts and which one size would most suit you and your digipak.

This advert of the basement Jaxx new concert tour was scanned onto the computer from the Rock 'n' pop magazine Q. This is also the size of advert we would like to use in the magazine Q. As the Basement Jaxx are a pop group and there music genre is very similar to that of the Bodyrockers, we thought this would be a good advert to scan in, as we can reflect from this and compare and contrast between the two.

Questionnaire for target Audience

After finding out our target audience was females aged 13-17 i decided to publish a questionnaire to see weather or not our current research was as well predicted as we had thought.

Here are the results of our questionnaire: -

We asked 21 females aged 13-17 a variety of 5 questions which are:-
1) how many of them liked the song by the Body Rockers 'I like the way you move' , 2)If dancing in the video would suit the type of genre it is, 3) if narrative would work for this video, 4) if they on this track on c.d. or any other music player, 5) and if not would they buy it. There was a variety of answers as you can see through our results chart.

After doing this research i found out that narrative would not suit this type of music video and therefore we would use the physical movement of dance to pursue what our target audience wanted. I also found out that half the people who didn't own this track on c.d. or any other music player would but this track on c.d.

Overall i think that our target audience are happy with the plans for our music video and the results from the questionnaire prove that. if i was able to do another questionnaire i would probably try and ask males of that age, to see weather or not there views differ from the opposite gender.

Audience research

Below you will find our audience research, we went onto youtube and typed in our artist's name which is 'BodyRockers' and the track which is 'I like the way you move' and then we went under the sub-titles and found the data and statistics from when the song was first published on youtube. But the graph with the names on it we researched and used it as evidence and proof to back up our previous prediction of what the countries were.

This video is most popular within the audience range of:-
Gender Age
Female 13-17
Male 45-54
Male 35-44

Looking at the statistics and data for the official video of 'I like the way you move' by the BodyRockers on Youtube, we discovered that the song is most popular within females aged 13-17 and least popular with males aged 35-44 and when this video came out we ourselves were in that age group and still are, but instead of being the early stages we r now leaving that age gap and still love. now we have found this out i can put a questionnaire together and asked a percentage of females aged 13-17 what they like about the song and if they would ever use it for work.

This video is most popular in:-

More
Less

After looking closely at this chart we found out that the country the video was most popular in was Australia and Tanzanian. The countries that were least popular in preference to this song are in the regions of South America, Africa and Asia This could be due to the cultural/ Social differences between these countries and Australian, Britain and North America. The bands origin is and Australian- British mix, hence the popularity. We suspect the popularity of the song/ band in America would be due to not only the political connection between Australia and America, but also the high recognition of the song/ band.
We did some research on google map to back up our theory and the map below shows Australia and Tanzanian, so as you can see the shape below matches the dark green shape above.

As you can see our prediction was correct.

Digipaks

The Digipaks is the name for patented card packaging from AGI that uses a molded plastic tray to hold the disc. In Europe they are only available from two printers. Digipaks make a big statement. The ultimate custom packaging for our CD replication. Digipaks are also a more environmentally friendly compared to plastic jewel boxes. Many UK companies do not have the facilities to manufacture Digipaks, especially in small quantities. We can manufacture Digipaks for a small a quantity as 500. Our package includes a high-gloss UV coating for a long lasting finish. Uncoated soft matte finish is available on request at no extra charge.

The term Digipak is used to describe a CD case that comprises a plastic disc tray that is integral within a folding cardboard case. Digipaks give the impression of an extra level of quality, and can be used with full colour printed images and text to provide a high level of presentation and design. They are suitable for packaging DVD discs, not just CDs.
cd digipaks are an attractive display option that can present far more information and graphics than standard jewel cases and offer a luxury finish and that much sought after keep factor that many people desire when selling or presenting their product. Our Digipaks are available in a 4 page and 6 page format as standard, and manufactured using a high quality card with either a gloss or matt finish. You can have more panels if required and as standard, there is a choice of clear, black, or white plastic disc trays, and others are available on request. The number or trays and panels can be pick and mixed depending on the design requirements, for example you can have two panels with one Digipak tray, two panels with two Digipak trays, two panels with one Digipak tray and one pocket for a booklet, eight panels with three Digipak trays and a die cut slit for a booklet. The list is endless and it just depends on the number of discs you need to hold and the amount of design graphics you need to display. To secure the pack closed, you can shrink wrap the Digipak or to really complete the distinctive and impressive look of your product and add even more value, the Digipak can go into a slipcase.

Basic 4 page Digipaks

The most basic Digipaks, featuring one tray. Options include a choice of tray colours (available in black, white or clear), number of trays (1 or 2) and tray positions, glued in booklets, slots or pockets for booklets, and three types of finish. Pop music Genre

Pop music is a music genre that developed from the mid-1950s as a softer alternative to rock 'n' roll and later to rock music. It has a focus on commercial recording, often orientated towards a youth market, usually through the medium of relatively short and simple love songs. While these basic elements of the genre have remained fairly constant, pop music has absorbed influences from most other forms of popular music, particularly borrowing from the development of rock music, and utilizing key technological innovations to produce new variations on existing themes.

Change of Video!

Due to lack of appropriate location and cast for a rap video we have decided that doing this style of genre probably wouldn't be best suited for us and have decided to change to a pop genre.

Music research

Genre

The genre I’m thinking of using is a rap theme, because I feel that you can pursue a very unusual style of video with rap and you can use lots of different ideas to portray your sting.

Performance

The performance normally interlinks between depression, loss or the excitement of being young and the thrill of doing what you want with anyone and anything. Often the culturally differences are portrayed through different racial backgrounds.

Place/ setting

Most rap videos are set around the streets, houses and general disturbed neighbourhoods with a lot of graphite and bad tempered youngsters. This style of genre normally involves gangsters, model/ dancer type women not wearing much clothing and the casino themes suggesting gambolling, which surrounds money problems. All these themes resort back to bad times as a child and a general upset in their upbringing as a youth.

copyright

My rap song is being made for my music video therefore everything is their own and hasn’t been stolen from websites or other rap singers songs. The backing track has been supplied from a website called ………………… which I will supply you with. This website is a copyright free zone so it is ok to use it as long as it isn’t used for profitable reasons.

This is the ultra commercial eminem in the rap song ‘just loose it’, the portrayal of his character in this song shows his differences with people and his fight through his hard times and his struggling background.

Persona of my rap star

My rap stars personas are completely different as one brings out the comedy side which comes through in the rap song where as the other star is much more ‘hip hop’ in style and uses more colloquial terms.

use of camera in rap videos

There are a lot of zooms, which show the close-ups on the rappers facial expressions. There are also a lot of side views in a two shot scene, which shows their relationships with women, and other dancers in the shot. There are a lot of pan shots, which show the surroundings which they are in normally there either an up town place i.e. casino with a lot of ‘bling’ and money around them showing there wealth. Or it’s set in the back street of an ally way showing their roughness and how their upbringing has been throughout their life’s. A lot of the focus goes to the clothing mainly and shows how they wear these style of clothes within there different cultures. The actual pace technique of a rap song is very fast and everything is upbeat so it might be a challenge for me to capture this movement in a few minutes. The edits are very snappy, but they are still cleanly cut, however, it gives that choppy look which effects the audience portrayal of the rappers.
