POP
Visual style-
The visual style is usually based on a narrative, however, for the more faster paced videos, repetition is also key, with less narrative, as it is so much more difficult to show a story with really fast frames, so with out a narrative, we have to find a mosaic of either objects, or maybe use a dance format, as in most fast paced videos.
Pace- The pace of a pop video, within this genre, is conventionally very fast, averaging on about 28 Per 30 seconds. For Bertie and I, we both feel like this is a challenge, as other genres of music, such as R’n’B, tend to have longer frames, of which would be easier to do! However, we have some great ideas for the video, because repetition is one of the visual styles that is commonly used in fast paced pop videos.
Mise en scene- for the type of pace of videos that we are researching, the Mise en scene, is mainly in either a studio or a setting that is continuous throughout the whole video. The background colours are predominantly a basic colour, or are monotonous, to emphasise the object of which the video wants the audience to focus their attention on.
Performance- the performance, in our case, a dance routine, will be performed by a female, as this is the object we want the audience to focus on, she will be performing a dance routine, and the camera will be like everyone’s eyes, watching her, as the songs lyrics clearly say; ‘I like the way you move’. However, at the beginning, we will be using a small amount of narrative, just so that the audience are not bored of just the same sort of visual throughout. Also, it will help the audience make sense of the video, as it is not in pops conventions to use videos of a strictly mosaic of motifs format (the genre that predominantly uses this is “rave” or “happy hardcore”). Pop videos usually have a story to them even if it still not that clear.
Lighting- Lighting is mainly focused on the ‘person’ or ‘band’ of which are performing, for example, if the artist is singing, the lighting will be focused on their face, or mouth, or if there is a dance routine being performed, then the lighting will be focused on the dancer, or certain body parts of the dancer.
Editing- editing is fast cut, the frames last for an average of two/ three seconds. In pop the editing would consist of mainly medium shots and close ups, however, there is a growing trend for use of abstract shots, or abstract angles, on certain objects, or maybe there will be an object in the frame, that when zoomed in on, then it will be the main focus on the next frame, this I feel is a very good effect.
Performance- the performance of the pop genre, is mainly surrounded in dance, the people are young and attractive, and are very slim. The style is squeaky clean, and clear cut. The lighting shows of the performance by highlighting the dance moves and the styles
